Why people switch from Proton Mail

  • Proton stores mail in Europe. Some firms want client mail stored in Canada; Velto stores it in Québec, Canada.
  • Desktop mail apps such as Outlook, Apple Mail and Thunderbird connect to Proton through Proton Bridge, on paid plans. Velto works with them directly.
  • Proton Mail Essentials costs about US$6.99 per user per month (as of October 16, 2026).

What you give up

Proton encrypts mail end to end, so Proton cannot read it. Velto does not offer end-to-end encryption: Velto's server handles stored mail in readable form to deliver it, filter spam and back it up. If you need end-to-end encryption, stay with Proton.

What moves

  • Every message, with its folders, read and unread state, flags, original dates and attachments.
  • Contacts and calendars come across as files: export them from Proton Mail (contacts as a .vcf file, calendars as .ics files) and import them into your Velto address book and calendar from your phone or computer.
  • Your domain stays yours. Only the mail records (MX) change.

What doesn't move

Proton Drive, Proton VPN, Proton Pass and Proton Wallet, and password-protected messages to outside recipients. Velto replaces the mailbox only. You can keep a Proton account for those apps, or use free alternatives such as Bitwarden for passwords.

Mail filters, rules and signatures don't move; set them up again in Velto.

How long it takes

  • Once your files are uploaded, a few GB usually imports within a few hours. Uploading the same file again doesn't create duplicates.
  • A day or more ahead, lower the time-to-live (TTL) on your MX records; then point them at Velto. Velto shows the exact records and checks them.
  • After the change, export anything that still arrived at Proton Mail and upload it too. Messages already imported aren't copied twice.
  • You get a “migration complete” email. Then you can close your Proton Mail account.

Law firms, accountants and consultants: the Compliance plan is US$30 per mailbox per year at the founding price, US$40 public.

How to switch

  1. Download Proton's Export Tool, sign in, and export your mail to your computer. Export your contacts and calendars from Proton's settings.
  2. Add your domain to Velto, create your mailboxes, and upload the mail export in the Velto dashboard as a .zip file.
  3. Change your MX records and remove Proton's verification, SPF and DKIM entries. Velto shows the exact records and checks them.

Migration is self-serve: upload the export in the Velto dashboard, and the import runs in the background while you start using Velto. Founding firms also get the founder's direct line if anything looks off.

Keep using your phone and apps

Remove the Proton Mail account from your mail apps and add your Velto address and password. Thunderbird, classic Outlook and Apple Mail on a Mac find the settings on their own; on an iPhone, a one-tap setup profile adds mail, calendar and contacts; Android takes a few more taps. Calendars and contacts sync too. With two-factor on, each mail app gets its own app password from the Velto dashboard. You can also install the Velto web app on your phone. Compliance customers use classic Outlook, Thunderbird, Apple Mail or the Velto app, not the new Outlook.

Questions

Is Velto end-to-end encrypted?

No. If your work requires end-to-end encryption, Proton is the better fit.

Why can't you copy my mail straight from Proton?

Proton's encryption means only your devices can decrypt your mail. The Export Tool does that on your computer first.

Can I keep Proton Pass and Proton VPN?

Yes. They don't depend on your business mailbox.
