Why people switch from Bell or Rogers

  • The address belongs to your internet account. It keeps working only while you keep that internet service; if you change providers or close the account, it can stop working.
  • You can't use your own domain. Clients see @bellnet.ca or @rogers.com, not your business name. Addresses such as info@ or billing@ for a team need a domain; Velto includes group addresses and 5 aliases per mailbox.
  • Velto stores mail on servers in Québec, Canada.

What moves

  • Every message, with its folders, read and unread state, flags, original dates and attachments.
  • Contacts and calendars come across as files: export them from Bell or Rogers (contacts as a .vcf file, calendars as .ics files) and import them into your Velto address book and calendar from your phone or computer.

What doesn't move

The address itself. Your @bellnet.ca or @rogers.com address stays with Bell or Rogers, and Velto can't receive mail for it. Keep the old address open for a few months, send your contacts your new address, and set an auto-reply or forwarding on the old one if your provider allows it.

Mail filters, rules and signatures don't move; set them up again in Velto.

How long it takes

  • First you need a domain. Registering one with a registrar usually takes minutes.
  • A mailbox of a few GB usually copies within a few hours.
  • There's no catch-up copy when your address changes: new mail goes to your new address as soon as people use it. Keep checking the old address until mail to it stops.

How to switch

  1. Register a domain for your business with a domain registrar; Velto doesn't sell domains. Add it to Velto and create your mailboxes. Velto shows the DNS records and checks them.
  2. Copy your old mail: in the Velto dashboard, enter your Bell or Rogers address and password. Rogers accounts may need an app password from the account's security settings.
  3. Tell your contacts, update your website, cards and invoices, and set an auto-reply on the old address.

Migration is self-serve: in the Velto dashboard, enter the old address and its password or app password, and the copy runs in the background while you start using Velto. Founding firms also get the founder's direct line if anything looks off.

Keep using your phone and apps

Add your new address and password to your mail app. Thunderbird, classic Outlook and Apple Mail on a Mac find the settings on their own; iPhone and Android take a few more taps. Keep the old account on your phone until mail to it stops. With two-factor on, each mail app gets its own app password from the Velto dashboard. You can also install the Velto web app on your phone.

Questions

Can I keep my @rogers.com or @bellnet.ca address?

Not at Velto. That address belongs to your internet provider. You get a new address on your own domain, and your old mail comes with you.

Do I need a website to have a domain?

No. A domain can be used only for email.

What if I change internet providers later?

Your Velto email isn't tied to your internet provider, so nothing changes.
